Homework is considered practice and is not used in the assessment of district standards. Nightly homework is used to practice skills and further develop understanding of concepts. Assessment of standards is done through student observation, performance, formative, and summative classroom assessments. Completing homework is an expectation and is reflected in the citizenship portion of the report card.
Nightly Practice Recommendations
Here are the recommendations for nightly practice. Each night, whether homework is assigned or not, 30-45 minutes should be set aside for practice.
- Homework (which is practice) should always be done first!
- Self-selected reading for at least 20 minutes.
- Math fact practice for 5-10 minutes.
- Spelling practice for 5-10 minutes.
I realize that time is tight at night, so creativity in accomplishing practice is important. A lot of practice can take place in the car! This practice time does not need to be done in a big block of time either. Fit things in the best way they work for you!
