Training & Practice
ORGANIZATIONAL/PARENT MEETING:
The fall organizational meeting is in October in the high school commons. This is the time to meet the coaches and other athletes, get information about training, equipment, and racing and to get comfortable with the expectations and rewards of the program.
TRAINING:
The on-snow season begins when the snow flies and continues through early March. Snow practice is held four to six times a week, including weekends, at the Brown County Reforestation Camp, Hen-Is-Rah Park, Neshota Park, Machickanee Trails and various other venues as needed. New Skier Development typically practices 3 or 4 times a week. Weekday practices start at 3:45 or 4 p.m. In case of no snow, dry land practice is substituted or occasionally the team may travel to snow. Fridays are reserved for waxing skis for weekend races. Dry land training begins right after fall sports wrap up in November and continue until there is snow.
IMPROVING TECHNIQUE AND FITNESS:
The club’s stated goal is to promote life long fitness and friendly competition through Nordic skiing. No matter what the level of technical skill a team member begins with, regular skiing and coaching give skiers an opportunity to challenge themselves physically and to learn with their peers. Team get togethers foster the social side of the sport. Our athletes typically finish the season fitter than ever before and have that advantage in their spring sports.
EQUIPMENT:
Kids like to ski fast. Equipment definitely contributes to control and speed in the sport. Supportive boots, modern bindings, light skis, good poles are part of what makes it fun to ski. The club has a fleet of skis, roller skis, boots and poles. This equipment is available for loan to committed members and depending on demand, it is possible to be fully outfitted with club equipment. The club supplies wax and teaches waxing for training and racing. As skiers improve, parents might consider purchasing equipment. Newer second hand skis that fit will do the job.
