GLOBE reading and language arts class
Exciting things are happening in our reading and language arts class! The 4th and 5th graders are currently researching a topic they chose about life in South Africa. Why South Africa you ask? Well, we just finished reading The White Giraffe, by Lauren St. John. This fiction story takes place in South Africa. And while the book and characters are fictional, the rich vocabulary, and African myths sparked the students' curiousity. We are writing an informational paper and magazine article on our topic. The class will then put together their own magazine featuring their South African articles. In our literature discussion groups, the fourth graders are discovering how Nazi soldiers invaded Denmark and a young girl's dangerous mission to save her Jewish friend in Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The fifth graders have entered the science fiction world and are dissecting The Supernaturalist, by Eoin Colfer. Both literature groups are responsible for reading a number of chapers three times a week and writing or answering reading responses to specific chapters. Ask your student about what they are reading and writing in class and what is due for the following day. In language arts class, the students are working on improving their understanding of verb and noun agreement, incorporating personal experiences, thoughts and feelings into their our fictional stories, and writing poetry. Each fictional story will be printed into a book.
GLOBE 4th and 5th grade Enrichment IE classes
What inspires an author to write? Fourth and Fifth graders are on a mission to find out. Each student is conducting an author study on their favorite writer. They are required to read two novels, write a summary of each and a character sketch, write and think about how they would have changed events in the book and how that might impact the story, the author's bio, list of books they've written, and awards they've won. Students will then share what they've read with the rest of the class.
